“FamLux” was born on WhatsApp when Natalia – at age 24 – moved to Luxembourg in September 2025 at the request of her company to help open their new office. It’s one way our family stays in touch remotely. But nothing is as satisfying as a two-week visit IRL to experience her new home.
Her second-story apartment in the upscale Belair neighborhood (Merl Parc bus stop) is a 20-minute walk – or six short stops on the #6 bus – to her office in the City Center. Most days, I walked into work with her and also met up with her for lunch.
With Luxembourg City’s population of approximately 135,000 people from all over the world, it’s a place almost anyone feels comfortable. Her neighborhood is charming and self-contained with a coffee shop, a park, local stores and shops, and adjacent high school track facilities.
Natalia’s such a generous host, and also appreciates a self-sufficient traveler as a guest, since she’s hard at work most days.
So…where to start?
After learning about Luxembourg, an exploration of the City best begins with downloading the Tourism office’s helpful App and taking one of their walking tour (offered through the Tourist Office) by a local who loves their homeland. Then a visit to the Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg is recommended, and some time discovering unexpected treasures at the National Museum of Art, History, and Archeology (MNAHA).
Of course, most of all, exploring cobblestone side streets, shops, and searching down the best croissant is among the most fun – my favorite was at the family-run haute-patisserie Oberweis on Grand-Rue.
