Moien (Moy-en), Wei meet et? Or, “Hi, how are you?” in Luxembourgish.
Welcome to “easy living” – where nearly any language goes (70% foreign residents and 168 nationalities represented here), where transportation is free, streets are clean, and where the next public parc or croissant is just a block away (the City operates 212 parc municipals).
Today, this financial and technology center for Europe, meets relaxation, with a quarter of the Capital made up of green spaces that infuse nature in and around the stone walls of its Old City, a UNESCO Heritage Site at the confluence of the Alzette and Perusse Rivers.
From the 16th Century until 1867, this steep, rocky outcrop protected by military fortress walls, served as a strategic position for one European power after another – from Holy roman Emperors to the House of Burgundy (1443) , the Habsburgs, the French and Spanish kings (until 1684), Austrians, and finally the Prussians (1867).
The City can be explored in a 2-3 hour walking tour, starting most days at 2 pm from the Tourism Office but worthy of more days to explore the many museums, walkways, cobblestone streets, and pedestrian walkways.
