As a season opener, Joffrey Ballet performed Atonement Oct. 17-27, 2024, at the Lyric Opera House in Chicago. I was fortunate enough to catch the Oct. 27 closing matinee from a mezzanine-level box seat.

The Lyric Opera orchestra playing Rossi’s score immediately mesmerized the audience as the curtain opened to reveal the restful sheep-dotted hills of 1935 English countryside, a stunning set designed by Michael Levine. The set, lighting, and costumes were perfection throughout.

Based on Ian McEwan’s novel, this full-length production was choreographed by Cathy Marston who is known for her narrative ballets and impressive 25-year career.

While the first act emphasized mime and contemporary dance, the second act provided significantly more balletic content.

The Joffrey dancers’ incredible muscular strength, agility, and emotion were showcased throughout the seemingly flawless performance.

It was extra special to have Marston appear on stage as part of the closing epilogue, giving voice to her process, and providing the audience a unique connection to the ballet’s creation story. This made the epilogue among my favorite segments of the two hour and 20-minute performance.

While the trailer does not do this ballet justice, here is the link. Learn more about the Joffrey’s 69th Season here.
