While in Granada, I am studying Spanish at Esquela DeLengua for two weeks. Estoy estudiando en Esquela DeLengua por dos semanas.

The first week had 7 students and teacher Jaime, and we learned and practiced Future Simple v. Future Proximo.1 We enjoyed reading each other’s (future) fortunes in Spanish, teaching each other how (in the future) to make our favorite recipe. We learned about two distinct Spainard perspectives: whether or not to use onions in the classic Spanish tortilla.

Week two in class with 6 students began today, Dec. 4, with teacher, Maria, along with a new set of challenges, like when to use por vs. para, en vs. a, and verbs ser vs. estar. A pictionary game helped us understand nuanced uses of ser vs. estar.

We are taking advantage of activities the school offers each afternoon or evening: for example tapas night, a guided tour of The Royal Chapel of Granada, and a walking tour of the Albayzin.

[1For example, Future Proximo is a high probability of something happening, for example “voy a estudiar Espanol a Granada” (I am going to….) or “Manana, viajo a Granada.” Meanwhile, Future Simple is having an intention to do something, for example “Este domingo desayuna chocolate con churros” (Tomorrow I might have chocolate with churros for breakfast). Then there are regular and irregular verb conjugations, along with the inevitable exceptions to the rules.]

Our school outing to walk the historic Albayzin neighborhood.
Walking tour with schoolmate and lawyer from Beijing China, Shiqi.
